HOW TO CATCH LUDERICK (BLACKFISH)

The break walls between the Macleay River boat ramp and its entrance, the entrance of Back Creek, the boulders in the bay and headlands and rocky areas between the Gaol and Hat Head all hold good numbers of luderick.
SIZE: Luderick can grow up to 50cm and 2kg however are most commonly caught between 25cm and 45cm.
AVAILABILITY: Luderick can be caught all year round.
PEAK SEASON: Peak season for Luderick is generally between May and August within the River/Creeks however they remain in good numbers on the ocean rocks all year round.
TACKLE/RIGGING: Luderick are a hard fighting fish but fight clean so light tackle is preferred. Centre Pin or Bait Runner Reels between 3000-4000 with 8-14lb line/leader is ample. Rod's should be between 9ft and 12ft and between 2-8kg. Most anglers prefer to use a finely tuned/weighted adjustable float. Float stoppers allow you to set the depth at which the bait is presented below the surface.
BAITS/LURES: Green weed or sea cabbage is the preferred bait for Luderick. They will also eat prawns, saltwater nippers, beach/blood worms. Imitation weed lures or weed flies work very well.
EATING QUALITY: Luderick if bled and iced promptly after capture are a great table fish. They have a firm white flesh and delicate flavour. Luderick are best when filleted and should be skinned and boned also before cooking.
